Foothpath interview @ RTHK – 19 July 2009
Yesterday RTHK aired a lengthy interview with Ah Fung on their show “Foothpath”. The host of this show is veteran radio announcer Candy Chea Suk Mui. Since the show is an hour and a half long I’ve split the translation to three parts. In part one Fung talks about his thoughts on his first concert, and his music journey!

Joey (J): wah, what time is it? You’re still sleeping?
For (F): wah, what are you doing here?
J: My God, you were going to have lunch with me! Did you forget? You didn’t answer my phone calls. Lucky your mum just left, otherwise, I wouldn’t have caught you.
F: I didn’t hear the phone ring at all, ok ok, let me sleep a bit more, then I will go out with you.
J: Sleeping? What time is it?
F: Can you see a clock in my room?

F: Can’t help it, working is too difficult. Hmm Speaking of it, if I have the brains, there should be many opportunities! So are there any jobs which earn lots of money, gives me freedom, and is something I can do?
J: Wah you’re very ambitious, why don’t you find a woman to support you?
F: No way, too restricting.
J: Then there isn’t anything, ah yeah. But I don’t know whether it will work.
F: What is it?
J: I read this in a magazine, this girl learnt tarot cards herself, earnt so much money! Definitely more than my current job.
F: Really? People believe in this kind of stuff?
J: I walk past that store sometimes, there’s a big queue, but really haven’t seen a man doing this type of job.
F: It’s good you said that, if everyone does it, I won’t do it. I’ll start learning tomorrow. I want to earn some quick money anyway, won’t be doing it forever. You know I’m afraid of boredom and commitment.
J: Of course I know… know from seeing how you treat girls…
F: Wah how can you say it like that… don’t talk about girls, let’s talk about our money making plan. So to be a tarot card master, the most important is to the appearance, need to look honest.
J: Can’t believe you thought of this…
F: If I make money, you’re definitely part of it…

F: Why did you change my surname?

L: Mum! Look at Siu Juen’s room! So messy! All her clothes are on the bed, on the floor, what’s she up to?
M: She’s back, she’s back.
Siu Juen (SJ): Mum, sister.
M: What’s with you? I called you so many times and you didn’t answer!
SJ: Really?
M: You look so pale, are you not feeling well?
SJ: Mum, I won’t be having dinner tonight. I want to go to bed early.

L: Siu Juen, are you okay?
SJ: Nothing.
L: You don’t need to lie to me, mum is not here. You don’t need to be afraid of saying anything.
SJ: I lost the necklace Jason gave me.
L: The one with the heart shaped crystal?
SJ: Hm.
L: Oh… so you’ve been unhappy because of the necklace, and searched your room like this…
SJ: Yeah, I wore this necklace all along. I don’t know how I could’ve lost it. I’ve already searched all the places I’ve been to, searched my room and the house and still can’t find it.
L: If your necklace broke while you were wearing it, actually it’s quite hard to find. Let’s just leave it, I’ll give you another one.
SJ: Sister, that’s not the issue. Jason said this necklace protects and watches over our relationship, I can’t rest without it. I’m afraid something might happen to him.
L: (sigh) Siu Juen, it has been so long already, you have got to move on with your life. Don’t blame sister for saying this, if the necklace is really that powerful, then it wouldn’t be like this now.
SJ: Whatever Jason says, I’ll believe him. I’ll keep waiting, plus, I will keep searching for the necklace regardless.

Joey: Wah, you only learnt tarot cards for two weeks and you’re setting up a store. So quick, are you any good?
For: You’re not doubting me right? I originally said I was going to learn for a week, now I haven’t slept and haven’t rested, learnt and practiced for two weeks, that shows my sincerity right?
J: Do you think you’re accurate?
F: Are you crazy! I already said I don’t believe in these kinds of things. It’s all trying to guess what people are thinking, as long as those people believe you, they will think – yeah yeah, it sounds so accurate! So it’s not related. Wei, don’t interrupt the opening of my business. Wait for my good news tonight.
J: OK, I’ll go then. By the way, you look really cool in a suit.
F: Crazy.

Siu Juen: Ah, excuse me…
F: Miss, how can I help you?
SJ: I would like to ask something.
F: What would you like to ask? About relationships?
SJ: Not really, I lost a necklace that my boyfriend gave me, can you help me find it?
F: Huh? Shouldn’t you go to the police if you lost something? Or ask your boyfriend to give you another one, that would be ok.
SJ: So you can’t help me, ok, thank you.

SJ: Ah For, what can I do now?
F: Think about the necklace you want to find and then pick a card, see what guidance it gives.
SJ: What is it…
F: Hmm… you picked the 16th card, it’s a tower. This card represents a thing which is temporary and changing, and these changes are often sudden, and quick.
SJ: So what does it mean?
F: The card is not upside down, so it means you’ll encounter difficulties first. But if you’re brave enough, in the end you’ll find what you were looking for.
SJ: Where should I go to find it?
F: High places.
SJ: High places? Like….
F: For example, have you been to the peak or mountain type places?
SJ: Nope…
F: But you’ve caught a bus right?
SJ: Yeah.
F: The top level of a bus is a high place…
SJ Yeah…why didn’t I think of it? I always catch the same two buses. I think I’ll definitely find it, thank you! You don’t need to give me change, bye bye!
F: Wah! $500! Is it that easy?

F: Wei my shout tonight, don’t need to go easy on me.
J: Wah you’re really generous. Hai but let me warn you, you should save up, not everyday you can blindly guess correctly.
F: I’m not blindly guessing, everything I say has been carefully analysed. A guy normally gives a girl a simple necklace with a heart shape pendant. Most people gives heart shapes, plus I didn’t say it definitely. I said… shape….pendant, for example a heart shape…. I didn’t say it was definitely a heart shape. Now this is technique.
J: Of course your speaking techniques are good, the peak then becomes a bus, this is crazy. Can’t believe that girl completely believed you, aaai, I kinda feel sorry for her.
F: Are you serious? Now you’re pretending to be the saint, you gave me this idea.
J: I only gave you the idea, didn’t know you would do so well.
F: Don’t look down on me, but then this girl is quite crazy. I have never heard of someone using tarot cards to look for something. Come on, can she be more practical? Don’t have a future believing in these things.
J: Wah, you lied to her, and now you’re saying these things. Without these people, where will you earn money from?
F: Why are you protecting her so much? You like her?

SJ: Yeah, I think I’ll find my necklace again very soon.
L: Really? Why?
SJ: I’m very lucky today, I found someone who used tarot cards, he really gave me some hints on finding the necklace.
L: Ah? Using tarot cards to find something? Will it work? Is he ripping you off?
SJ: No, I’ve been to a few stalls before. Once I said I wanted to find something they said they’re not confident. It was only that guy (Ah For) whose eyes look so determined, what he said was also very accurate. Just believe me, it’ll all be very smooth. I need to go to bed now, tomorrow morning I’ll go to the bus company to check whether anyone had found the necklace. You go out and have dessert with mum, goodnight!

Siu Juen’s mum: How is Siu Juen?
L: She’s very happy today. She said there was a master who said he could help her find the necklace, so don’t need to worry.
Mum: How could I not be worried? While the necklace is still missing, she still has something to occupy herself with. If she finds it, she’ll end up hugging the necklace day and night waiting for Jason to come back.

SJ: Mum, I won’t find anyone else.
L: Wah, you said you were going to sleep, why did you suddenly appear?
SJ: I’m going to the bathroom. I’ve already said this many times. Jason is a good man, he won’t leave because he’s just playing around. Everything he does there is a reason. Maybe he had too much pressure, so just wanted to be alone. No matter what I will wait for him, I know exactly what I’m doing. I know he’ll come back.
L: Siu Juen, mum is only caring about you. Since you want Jason to come back so much, and you said that tarot card master…..
SJ: Ah For
L: Yeah yeah, you said Ah For is so good, why don’t you ask him to check where Jason is?

SJ: The person I need to find is my boyfriend.
F: Huh? You lost your boyfriend? The one who gave you that necklace?
SJ: Actually, the story needs some time to tell, will I disturb your business?
F: Well not disturbed, actually it’s almost closing time. But honestly I’m very hungry. Would you mind if we go to somewhere nearby where I can eat and hear your story?

Siu Juen (SJ): Yeah, for three months already, I really don’t know what to do.
F: Have you looked for his family or his friends?
SJ: I have never met his family and I don’t know his friends.
F: Huh? You’ve been together for a whole year and you don’t know anyone around him?
SJ: He said his friends are all very brash, and wouldn’t get along with me. He also said his family were difficult people to get along with, so he will introduce me to them later.
F: Did you guys fight before he disappeared?
SJ: No, he was very busy at the time, so we didn’t see each other much. So how could we fight?
F: What does he do?
SJ: He works in the family business. You should eat, the food is getting cold since we kept on talking.

SJ: You can call me Siu Juen. So how come you have such an interesting name – Ah For?
F: Oh that’s my nickname, when I was young I was always sick. So my family took me to see someone (like a Chinese fortune teller), and he said my life is lacking fire, so they just called me Ah For.
SJ: Oh so you believed in these kind of things since you were young, so even though you’re a guy you play tarot cards.
F: Haha, why did you ask me to play tarot cards last time? You saw that I was a guy would you trust me?
SJ: Actually I didn’t think about it too much. Before I had already been to a few stalls, they all treated me like a crazy person. So I accidentally stumbled onto your place. So lucky that I met you, and you’re such a good person.
F: Are you crazy? I charged you, more than I should’ve too. So I hope I can help you as much as I can, but…
SJ: But what?
F: If you don’t mind me asking, did you ever think that your boyfriend hasn’t disappeared, he’s just avoiding you?
SJ: Doesn’t matter, I know you’ll think like that because I know my family also have these thoughts. It’s quite normal I don’t mind.
F: So you think it’s normal to see it that way, but why do you think that’s not the case?
SJ: Maybe in a lot of people’s eyes, I’m a stupid person. But this is my principle, if the person doesn’t admit it, or I see it with my own eyes, I won’t suspect that anyone is deceiving me. It’s because I think this will be very unfair on the other person. If I suspect you today, but you didn’t actually deceive me, then I would hurt your feelings. Or you thought it’s quite impossible, but I’m like that. All along I’ve stuck to this principle, especially when Jason is my other half. He is one of the closest people to me. How can I suspect him? If one day I’m so unlucky as to find out something did happen to him, I will regret that I once suspected him.
F: Your boyfriend is very lucky, to have a girlfriend as good as you.
SJ: Hai, I’m only respecting each other and our relationship.
F: That’s already quite good, in this era not many people think like that. It’s so late already, I’ve heard your story. You should come and find me tomorrow, I’ll try a more complicated method of playing tarot cards, need to pick a few more cards. Go home, get some rest and don’t think too much, because if your tired it’ll affect the cards, and won’t be accurate.
SJ: Thank you very much, Ah For. You’re a really good person, even listened to my complaints.
F: You’re saying these kinds of things again! If you keep on saying it I’ll be too afraid to charge you.
SJ: Of course that’s can’t happen. But I don’t know when I can come tomorrow, since I have to work overtime.
F: I’ll give you my phone number, call me before you come.
SJ: OK.
F: Today fate brought us here to have a meal together so I’ve met another friend. Even if you don’t come and play tarot cards, you can call me if you need anything. I will definitely help if I can. Oh yeah, it’s so late and you’re going home alone? Do you need me to take you home?
SJ: Oh that’s not necessary, I catch a taxi straight back home. I don’t want to bother you.

Joey (J): Wah who are you calling? Calling me?
F: How can you be so scary and appear out of nowhere? Why are you here?
J: Of course you don’t want me to be here, you’re scared that I might see through that tough exterior and find your softer side. But I’m sorry, I have been sitting behind you all along. I originally planned to eat while waiting for you to finish work, but you’re only looking at her, can’t see me.
F: What are you talking about?
J: You know what I’m talking about. You wouldn’t do something unless there’s an advantage to yourself. What are you trying to get by being so helpful? You didn’t develop feelings for her after just seeing her twice?
F: Not even going to bother to respond to that, aaai, so tired, going home to sleep now.

For (F): I, Ah For have met many girls before, but I have never met a girl like Siu Juen. Ever since I chatted with her that time, I have this feeling that I don’t want to hurt her. Her principles, her commitment to her relationship, all made me speechless. At first I thought she was quite silly, but now I actually admire her attitude. I wonder if I had gone crazy. Where did my principles go? I don’t want to hurt her, but from the moment that she believed in me, I was already hurting her. Thinking back on what I said, after hearing my false words she crazily went to catch buses until she got sick, my heart really hurts for her. After eating with her that time, I’ve seen her a few more times. Besides playing tarot cards, we also chatted a lot. But we cannot continue to be like this, I can’t make up any more things to encourage her illusions. I think I must quickly end this mess. Otherwise I don’t know how it will end.

Siu Juen (SJ): How come you don’t look too well today? Are you okay?
F: Siu Juen, I don’t think I can play tarot cards for you anymore.
SJ: Why?
F: My father had some health problems lately. Mum spoke to someone who said that I’m affecting his health by playing tarot cards, so I’m closing my business. But don’t worry, I won’t mind if you go to other stalls. Plus we’re friends, I will definitely do everything I can to help you find the necklace and Jason.
F: Ah For, I understand. You don’t need to worry about me. Maybe fate is testing me and Jason, so they’re not letting you to continue to help me. But I’m very happy to meet such a good friend like you. I won’t give up, you will find him with me right?
F: Of course.
SJ: Good, then I’ll rely on the clues you gave me before to keep looking.

For’s Father (FF): Son, what you are doing here?
F: Ah? I’m just playing tarot cards.
FF: Huh? Aren’t you an atheist? You don’t believe in these things!
F: Nah I’m just playing around. You finished jogging?
FF: Ah yeah. Otherwise, how would I have such a healthy body?
F: Ok, know you’re so tough. Go and have a shower, starting to smell…
FF: Really? Okokok.
F: I’ve never believed in tarot cards. But because of Siu Juen, I’m playing them tonight. The reason is not to help her find the necklace or Jason, but I really want the cards to tell me Jason is not coming back. Suddenly, I feel that I’m such a terrible person. Because of my selfishness, I don’t want Jason to appear again.

SJ: Today is Sunday, don’t you need to be with your family?
F: Ah….my dad said he didn’t feel well, so we’re not going to yum cha today.
SJ: Is he okay? Didn’t his health get better after you stopped playing tarot cards?
F: Oh… yeah yeah. Much better than before, can’t believe that person my mum went to was so accurate haha.
SJ: That is good then. Having a complete family is the most important. You’re catching the bus with me again today, did you take some travel sickness medicine?
F: I don’t need to take them. But I’ve bought them for you. Actually once you get on you can just search through the whole bus and that should be ok. Why does everytime you have to travel the whole trip?
SJ: I’m afraid that the necklace will fall through some cracks, it’ll only fall out when the bus is moving.
F: Really?
SJ: You won’t understand. When a person has no hope they’ll try everything.
F: Doesn’t matter, I quite like going for a ride anyway.

Jason’s girlfriend: Wei, don’t be like that.
Jason: Just kidding! You won’t get angry over such a small thing right?
SJ: Jason’s voice! It’s Jason’s voice!

Siu Juen (SJ): Jason!
Jason (J): Wahhh, hello, what a coincidence!
SJ: What coincidence? What are you talking about? Did you know I’ve been looking for you for a few months? Where did you go? I was really worried about you!
Jason’s girlfriend (JGF): Jason, who is she?
J: Just a friend.
For (F): Friend? Did you know your girlfriend had been searching for you? Are you a man?
J: Wei, who are you? Siu Juen, only haven’t seen you for a short time, how come your taste in men had turned so bad?
F: I’m Siu Juen’s friend, if you continue saying this stuff I’ll hit you.
SJ: Can you tell me what is happening? Why did you suddenly disappear? And now you seem like another person…
JGF: Wei, tell her the truth!
J: Don’t need to say it, don’t need to say so much…
JGF: Aii, since you’re so stubborn, then I will say it. I’ve been with Jason for half a year, I’m his girlfriend! We just came back from a holiday in Hawaii, got off the plane yesterday. Haven’t caught the bus for so long, today just thought we’d catch it for fun, so much luck for bumping into you. Aii… let it go already. Even if Jason liked you before, he feels nothing for you now.
SJ: Is she right? Is she right??
F: Siu Juen, don’t be like this….
SJ: What she said…. are they correct? Why did you become like this?
J: Wei wei…. you really don’t understand do you? I didn’t “turn into” this, I’ve always been like that. You were stupid, you were naïve. Just sweet talked some things to you and you believed everything. We’re both adults, should understand the rules of the game. However, I do know you don’t understand the rules, so I quietly left, to avoid you bothering me. I can’t believe you didn’t get it.
SJ: Why? Why?
F: Siu Juen, Siu Juen, are you okay?

F: Siu Juen, are you okay? Feeling better?
SJ: Where is Jason?
F: You still care about him, of course he left. Would he come back to see you?
SJ: Am I really stupid?
F: Everyone has been stupid before, I’ve been stupid before. Don’t think about it too much, get some rest. Otherwise I’ll be worried.
SJ: I feel so ashamed, I’ve embarrassed myself in front of you.
F: Silly, if you shout me a meal, then I won’t tell anyone.
SJ: Actually I’m really unhappy.
F: Of course I know, silly girl.
SJ: Will you find the necklace with me?
F: Still searching? He treated you like this, why are you still looking for it?
SJ: Jason said the necklace can protect me and him. Even if he doesn’t like me anymore, I still want him to be happy.

F: Seeing Siu Juen like this, how can I tell her my conversation with that bastard Jason?

J: Hahaha, I was hoping to test her, to see if she’s really that naïve. Can’t believe she thought it’s real. If she wants to believe it there’s nothing I can do. But I can tell you, it was all made up. Wei why do you care so much, looks like you’re interested in her! Don’t say I didn’t warn you, not everyone can put up with this girl. Super annoying, super clinging, pretending to be naïve, I really picked the wrong girl that time.

SJ: What happened with Jason made me rethink my attitude towards relationships. I can’t believe the fake masks people put on is that scary. Now I really understand that to find a true person is not easy. Time passed by slowly, Christmas, New Years were all spent quietly. Valentine’s Day is coming soon. How many couples are actually giving their true self to the other person?

F: Follow me….
SJ: Wah! Are you serious? We’re completely too old for this.
F: Why should there be barriers in life, are you afraid that people will laugh at you? Let’s find a kid to pretend that he’s our son. Wei, little kid, can you pretend to be my son?
SJ: You’re crazy.
F: Will you believe that I’ll win a soft toy for you?
SJ: Be good if it’s that easy.
F: Watch me..
SJ: Wei, don’t throw it anymore, it’s like throwing money into the sea.

F: Siu Juen, I’m serious towards our relationship. Yes, I used to be a bad person, but I changed because I regret what I did and because I really like you.
SJ: I really can’t accept it. I can’t accept that our relationship was based on a series of lies. Why did you have to lie to me? Why? Why did you disappoint me?

Ling: Truthfully, who on this earth would like to be lied to? But do we have to be so stubborn every time? I don’t view it like that. But I only want to say to you, after you left, there wasn’t a moment in my mind where I didn’t think about you. I really want to apologise for what I’ve done in the past. I admit that I was a loser, didn’t want to work hard, didn’t get a proper job, and only wanted to lie to people to earn quick money. It was you who changed me. After I met you I’ve learnt something – to respect myself and to respect love. The reason why I didn’t tell you everything, was because I was really afraid that after I told you, I won’t have a chance to see you again. I was afraid that I will never see you again. Can never catch the bus with you anymore. The only reason why I don’t regret lying to you in the beginning, was because if I wasn’t like that in the past, then I wouldn’t have the chance to meet you. Sorry. Because of my selfish behaviour I’ve hurt you. But believe me, after we were together I have never lied to you. This is the same in the future. I’ve spent a lot of time picking the necklace inside. It doesn’t have magical powers but it definitely represents my love to you. If you can give me another chance to treat you well, open the door and I will be there. Let me put that necklace on for you, please?

F: Siu Juen.
SJ: How did you know when I will open the door for you?
F: I didn’t know, but I will wait for you regardless. Happy Valentines Day.
